Palatial Upper East Side townhouse designed by Delano & Aldrich asks $28.8M

The nearly 10,000 square foot mansion last traded hands over two decades ago

A palatial townhouse on East 88th Street, on the Upper East Side, is on the market for the first time in decades, and is asking $28.8 million. What this mansion lacks for in width, it more than makes up for in height: it has a total of nine floors that start at the cellar level and end on the rooftop.

The house opens up through a spacious gallery on the first floor, which features the formal dining room and kitchen. Also on this floor is a sprawling patio, which offers up tons of space for outdoor seating and is covered in greenery. The parlor and the library are located on the floor above that. The dining room, the parlor, and the library all come with 15-foot-tall ceilings, long casement windows, wood-burning fireplaces, and original moldings.

Six bedrooms are located on the floors above that, though the house itself has a total of eight bedrooms and more than seven bathrooms. The master suite takes up all of the third floor, and has tons of closet space, an ensuite bathroom, and a den that can easily double up as an additional bedroom.

The townhouse was designed by noted architects William Adams Delano and Chester Homles Aldrich around the turn of the 20th century. The duo was known for designing Beaux Arts-style mansions for New York's elite families, and were also the design team behind the John D. Rockefeller Estate in Mount Pleasant, which is known as Kykuit. The Upper East Side townhouse last traded hands in 1994, according to property records, and is owned by billionaire businessman Paul J. Fribourg.
