The LPC will allow the company to convert a historic building into a concept hotel
Restoration Hardware has been given the green light to move forward with plans to construct a concept hotel at 55 Gansevoort Street, just steps away from their flagship store in the Meatpacking District, after being sent back to the drawing board in July 2016 to make alterations to designs for the landmarked building that it will alter.
According to Crain's, the Landmarks Preservation Commission gave approval on Tuesday to convert the historic structure into a 14-room hotel after previously taking issue with a glass screen encircling the proposed roof deck and pools.
Anderson Architects, the firm behind the design, was forced to come up with new plans for the glass enclosure to make sure that it wouldn't be as evident. Though the LPC has approved of the revised plans, which call for a shortened rooftop addition, the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation still objects. According to them, the renovation would disturb the "visual cohesion of the district." Can't win 'em all.
