In Harlem, NYPL's Schomburg Center renovation is nearing completion

The two-year renovation cost $22 million

The two-year renovation of the New York Public Library's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture is nearly complete, new construction site photos by Field Condition have revealed.

The renovation, the second phase of a broader renovation (the first phase was completed in 2007) was announced towards the end of 2015. The NYPL spent $22 million to bring about numerous changes at the Harlem institution.

These include a larger gift shop, which is now located towards the front of the center, a renovation of the second-floor reading room, and Rare Book Collection vault, changes to the streetscape and landscape outside the center, and most notably, changes to the exterior of the building.

Architecture firm Marble Fairbanks designed a new glass and metal paneled facade on the south and east sides of the building, which now also provides views into the ground floor of the building.

Earlier this year, the Schomburg Center was declared a National Historic Landmark, along with 23 other new landmarks across the nation.
