Here's what to expect during NYC's 4th of July celebrations
We're just days away from celebrating the country's birthday and everyone is getting ready for the big Macy's 4th of July fireworks. While everyone is looking for the best places to watch the spectacular, it's also important to know how public transportation and getting around Manhattan will be affected.
Street closures and traffic changes
While the Department of Transportation hasn't put out their official list of street closures, expect all of Midtown to be a no-drive-zone on the 4th of July. If you do plan on driving, here's where you can likely expect heavy congestion (h/t My NY Taxi):
Manhattan:
- FDR Drive between Brooklyn Battery Underpass and East 63rd Street
- South Street between Whitehall Street and Robert F. Wagner Sr. Place
- FDR Driver Service Roads between Cherry Street and 63rd Street
- Water Street between Whitehall Street and Fulton Street
- Pearl Street between Fulton Street and Robert F. Wagner Sr. Place
- Whitehall Street between Water Street and South Street
- Broad Street between Water Street and South Street
- Old Slip between Water Street and South Street
- Robert F. Wagner Sr. Place between Pearl Street and South Street
- Cherry Street between Jackson Street and FDR Drive
- Delancey Street between Lewis Street and FDR Drive
- East Houston Street between Baruch Place and FDR Drive
- East 6th Street between Avenue D and FDR Drive
- East 10th Street between Avenue D and FDR Drive
- Avenue C between East 16th Street and East 20th Street
- East 20th Street between 1st Avenue and Avenue C
- East 23rd Street between 1st Avenue and Avenue C
- East 26th Street between 1st Avenue and Avenue C

- Vernon Boulevard between 54th Avenue and Newtown Creek / Dead End
- 54th Avenue between Center Boulevard and Vernon Boulevard
On Staten Island, meanwhile, the Travis 4th of July Parade—the self-proclaimed longest running annual Independence Day parade—will host its 107th annual event beginning at noon. That event will cause traffic irregularities as the procession travels throughout Travis, Staten Island.
The route is as follows:
Formation
- At Showplace Center (East Service Road) Victory Boulevard to Glen Street
Route
- At Showplace Center (East Service Road) Victory Boulevard to Glen Street
- Glen Street between Victory Boulevard and Cannon Avenue
- Cannon Avenue between Glen Street and Victory Boulevard
- Victory Boulevard between Cannon Avenue and Glen Street
Dispersal
- At Showplace Center
All access roads into Travis, including the Victory exit off Route 440, will be closed beginning at 11:30 a.m.
How MTA and ferry service will be affected on July 4th
On Tuesday, the subway will operate on a Saturday schedule but with extra service though there will be many changes along various lines that you can read up on here.
The NYC Ferry will operate on the following holiday schedule:
East River Route:
The East River route will operate on a normal weekday schedule and ending early.
Below are the last departures for the day:
- Last Pier 11 departure bound for E.34th street: 2:26 pm
- Last E.34th street departure bound for Pier 11: 2:57 pm
There will be no midtown shuttle bus service provided on this day. Shuttle bus service will resume its normal schedule on July 5, 2017.
Rockaway Route:
Normal weekday schedule.
East and West bound shuttle buses will operate on a normal weekday schedule. We will be providing additional capacity on the West Shuttle bus route for beach goers.
South Brooklyn Route:
Normal weekday schedule.
