The historic building will be incorporated into its supertall neighbor at 111 West 57th Street
Construction is zipping right along at 111 West 57th Street, SHoP's supertall-to-be that's rising atop the old Steinway Hall in Midtown. The latest milestone for the skinny skyscraper actually doesn't have much to do with the new building itself; instead, it pertains to the erstwhile headquarters of the Steinway company.
That structure, located at 109 West 57th Street, was originally erected in 1925 and served as the piano manufacturer's home base until 2014, when the company moved to make way for construction. Because the building and its massive, beautiful rotunda are both landmarks, developers JDS and Property Markets Group had to account for it when designing the new skyscraper. The solution: It'll be absorbed into the new building, and will serve as an entry point for residents (who also get the benefit of a private porte cochère).
In order to do that, though, Steinway needed to be restored. After being protected by scaffolding to facilitate construction, the building was unsheathed this week—you can see its newly spiffed-up limestone facade in an Instagram post from JDS, above. The tower itself passed the Steinway building earlier this year.
JDS has been pretty active with the Instagram updates; just yesterday, they posted photos of the first panels being put into place on the slender tower. The 1,421-foot skyscraper will be covered in those bronze and terra cotta panels when completed.
