19th-century Brooklyn Heights townhouse with modern renovation seeks $8.3M

It joins the crowd of Brooklyn homes asking $8 million and higher

As the asking price for a Brooklyn townhouse gets ever higher, this one, at 174 Clinton Street in Brooklyn Heights, joins the crowd of seven-digit homes.

The 22-foot-wide home, located within the Brooklyn Heights Historic District, features six bedrooms, three baths, and a $8.3 million price tag. A quick perusal of Brooklyn's most expensive homes shows that while expensive, there's no shortage of residences now asking $8 million and above throughout the borough. (The most expensive house remains this Mill Basin mansion, now asking $18 million after years on and off the market.)

A recent renovation was an effort in "blending 19th-century scale with 21st-century luxury," according to the listing. Details like arched wooden double doors leading into the wood-paneled, marble-tiled entry were restored, and the parlor floor maintains its grandiose feel with three working fireplaces. Pocket doors separate the formal dining room, which includes a decorative fireplace and a pair of French doors leading to the outdoor deck.

The front entry hall leads through a custom-built butler's pantry to the kitchen. Along with lots of top-of-the-line appliances—including two dishwashers and a wine fridge—the space boasts hand-blown light fixtures by Alison Berger. The west wall of the kitchen has extra-large bay windows, for light and views of the back garden.

The third floor holds a more informal, loft-like family living room plus the master suite. That bedroom has a wall of bay windows showcasing a 50-foot cherry tree out back.

The garden level is accessible from the parlor floor or through a separate entrance. It's configured with a front office with a working fireplace, a full bathroom, and guest bedroom with a view of the garden. The backyard itself was landscaped with a bluestone patio with Belgian block trim. It's surrounded by a climbing hydrangea, 45-foot River Birch tree, and a wall of evergreen bamboo. Other perks added in the renovation—back inside the townhouse—include new oak floors, marble and limestone mantlepieces, and fire baskets on the four of the fireplaces.

The six-bedroom, three-bathroom townhouse has been listed by Compass for $8.3 million.
