Yes, it's already time to start thinking about Christmas in New York
It's only the first week of November, but signs of the impending Christmas season are already popping up around New York City. Decorations are for sale in some stores, ice-skating rinks are already open for business, and as of this week, Rockefeller Center has chosen the enormous evergreen that will be the center of its holiday festivities.
This year's tree is, like many other years, an enormous Norway Spruce, this time coming all the way from State College, Pennsylvania. As for its stats: it's 75 feet tall, weighs approximately 12 tons, and it's about 80 years old—or it was, before it sacrificed itself for a month's worth of holiday whimsy.
The huge tree will be cut down next week, and make the trip from Pennsylvania to New York beginning November 9; it's due to arrive in Rockefeller Center on November 11, giving the folks there enough time to decorate it with thousands of LED lights before its big debut on November 29. It'll be in place until the beginning of January.
