Upper East Side mansion that Michael Jackson once called home lists for $39M

The 19th-century townhouse has housed many famous names over the years

A sprawling Upper East Side mansion owned by Moroccan-born billionaire and Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Marc Lasry just hit the market for a eye popping $39 million. While the eight-figure price tag isn't enough to warrant a spot on the list of the city's most expensive homes for sale, it's certainly nothing to scoff at either.

The Beaux-Arts home, located on 74th Street between Madison and Fifth avenues, dates back to 1898; it was designed by architect Alexander Welch, who is also credited with designing Alexander Hamilton's Harlem home, now known as Hamilton Grange.

According to the brokerbabble, it's been home to many a notable name over the year, including artist Marc Chagall and the late Michael Jackson, who rented the house in the 1990s. Furthering its pop-culture bona fides, the home's exterior was also used as a stand-in for Nate Archibald's posh house on Gossip Girl.

This six-story mansion spans 12,745 square feet, with at least eight bedrooms, nine bathrooms, three sitting rooms, a media room, a cellar, a home gym, and much more. Many of its original details—such as a winding oak staircase, stained glass windows, elaborate molding, and 10 functioning fireplaces—remain intact.

But it also has modern conveniences, including a massive eat-in kitchen, an elevator, and central air conditioning/heating.

Outdoor space isn't lacking here: there is a deck on the main floor, a third floor terrace, and a huge landscaped roof deck with skyline views. And if that isn't enough, Central Park is less than a block away.

Lasry purchased the enormous home for $11 million in 2001, so if he manages to fetch the $39 million asking price, he'd nab a tidy profit.
