Former East Village home of Lucky Cheng’s will become apartments

The developer plans to erect a seven-story building with 22 apartments

Two months after developer Rybak Development purchased the former home of the East Village drag restaurant, Lucky Cheng's, a plan has emerged for its conversion. Plans submitted with the city's Department of Buildings reveal that the developer wants to erect a seven-story residential building at 101 East 2nd Street.

The project will measure 19,000 square feet and bring 22 new apartments to the neighborhood. There's very little known about the project right now, but from information on the building's plans we know that this new development will have some type of commercial space, a ground-floor recreational area that will be able to accommodate 49 people, and parking space for 11 bikes.

Brooklyn-based Zproekt Architecture is listed as the applicant of the record on the plans—Rybak is collaborating with the same firm on a quirky Williamsburg condo called Element88. Rybak is perhaps best known as the developer behind the ritzy waterfront condo in Sheepshead Bay.

Rybak's purchase of the the former Lucky Cheng's site for $12.25 million included not just the drag restaurant site at 24 First Avenue but also 99-101 East 2nd Street. Together these properties form an L-shaped lot at the intersection of First Avenue and Second Street.
