Stately Upper East Side townhouse with Sister Parish interiors asks $8.9M

The home once entertained the likes of Nancy Reagan and the prince of Denmark

The stately Upper East Side townhouse of the onetime United States Ambassador to Denmark is now on the market for $8.9 million. The New York Times first reported on the townhouse of John L. Loeb Jr., which has hosted the likes of Nancy Reagan, Prince Frederick of Denmark, and Leonard and Judy Lauder, the former being the chairman of the Estée Lauder.

Loeb Jr. and his wife, Sharon have now decided to move up north to Purchase, NY, where they own an 83-acre estate. Loeb Jr. told the Times that the couple was finding it difficult to maintain the five-story Upper East Side townhouse, and Sharon added that the house was better suited to a younger family where they could "create a lot of beautiful memories."

The 143-year-old townhouse is located at 237 East 61st Street, and Loeb Jr. purchased it all the way back in 1961 for $200,000. He soon brought on interiors queen Sister Parish—known for decorating the Kennedy White House, among other major projects—to design the townhouse, and her influence can still be seen throughout, most notably in the library on the parlor floor, with its green walls and chintz furniture and curtains.

Spanning 5,640 square feet, the townhouse has seven bedrooms, six and a half bathrooms, a garden in the back, and an elevator that services all floors of the building.
