23 NYC neighborhoods are now vying for Amazon's new HQ

The competition to secure Amazon's new headquarters is heating up

The nationwide competition to secure Amazon's second headquarters is heating up, and New York City is making a stronger push to ensure they make the cut. On Wednesday, the city's Economic Development Corporation announced that it had received more than two dozen proposals from 23 different neighborhoods across the city for potential new Amazon headquarters.

"No other city in North America has the space, the ingenuity, or the energy that we can offer Amazon," Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen, said in a statement.

The submissions from different neighborhoods came about after the NYCEDC issued a request for expressions of interest (RFEI) on September 15. The city is looking to identify privately owned sites that can complement publicly owned ones, thereby offering up more square footage for Amazon. In all, the submitted proposals offer up over 50 million square feet across the city.

These submitted proposals in NYC represented at least 50 different sites, and the work of more than 40 organizations and developers eager to secure Amazon's second headquarters. The e-commerce giant had asked cities across the country to identify sites that can offer "at least 500,000 square feet of commercial space by 2019 and up to 8,000,000 square feet beyond 2027."

Separate from the NYCEDC, elected officials in each borough have also been making the case for Amazon to open in their respective boroughs. Just last week, Amazon announced that it was expanding its NYC footprint by opening a huge new office at the Manhattan West megaproject.

In addition to that space, which will debut next year, Amazon has a fashion photo studio in Brooklyn, a bookstore at Columbus Circle, a Prime Now hub on 34th Street, and a massive fulfillment center is in the works on Staten Island.

As for its second headquarters, the NYCEDC will go through the proposals its received so far, and present a final proposal to Amazon on October 19.
