Construction on Turkey’s glassy new Midtown East consulate is underway

The 32-story building will also have several diplomatic residences

Work is now underway on Turkey's new consulate building designed by Perkins Eastman. A 12-story building owned by the consulate was demolished to make room for the new 32-story skyscraper, which will be known as Türkevi.

Located at 821 United Nations Plaza, on New York City's Consulate Row, the building will have a host of functions when it is complete. Aside from operating as a consulate and a permanent mission to the United Nations, the building will also have residences on the upper floors for diplomats and their families.

The project was first announced in March last year, and the consulate filed plans for the new building last fall. Now about a year later, work is ready to get underway. Perkins Eastman's design for the building is inspired by the Turkish crescent, particularly referenced in the way the glass facade of the building curves as it ascends.

In addition to all the regular consulate features like a visa and passport office, the building will also feature an auditorium, a cultural center with rotating exhibits of Turkish art and artifacts, and an open terrace on the building's podium, for events.

Construction on the project is expected to wrap in the fall of 2020.
