9/11 Tribute Center will triple its size in new Financial District location

The expanded center is opening at 92 Greenwich Street

The 9/11 Tribute Center, which has operated out of a onetime deli since 2006, is opening in a new location this week. According to the Wall Street Journal, the 36,000-square-foot center will triple in size when it moved to 92 Greenwich Street. The expansion ran into some controversy last year, which has apparently worked itself out.

The center, which operates independently from the 9/11 Memorial Museum, offers visitors the opportunity to speak with a person affected firsthand by the September 11th attacks. The former HQ wasn't large enough for large galleries or teaching space, but the new location will try to appeal to bigger tour groups, the Journal says. It includes a small area at street level, galleries on the second floor, and administrative and gathering space in the basement. The center's photo wall, which displays hundreds of images of those who died on 9/11, will be on display in the new location, alongside interactive exhibits and a selection of video and audio.

It's located a few blocks south of the old location, and a little further away from the World Trade Center site. Jennifer Adams-Webb, a co-founder and chief executive of the 9/11 Tribute Center, said the center would have to step up its marketing to bring tourists in, but is ultimately happy with the new location. "The beautiful part of this location is that we are halfway between the Statue of Liberty and the World Trade Center," she told the Journal.
