Bjarke Ingels’s undulating East Harlem rental begins its ascent

Gotham East 126th Residential will bring 233 rentals to the neighborhood come 2018

It's been eight months since Bjarke Ingels's undulating Harlem rental building broke ground on East 126th Street, and just long since there's been any news from the site. But new photos from Field Condition show that work is moving right along. The building will top out at 11 stories and stands at about three now. As is, building's slight concave curve, the signature Bjarke Ingels wonkiness of the design, is already noticeable.

The building, dubbed Gotham East 126th Residential and developed by Blumenfeld Development Group, will be clad in a blackened stainless steel panel facade that Ingels told Curbed is "inspired by an elephant's skin." Inside, the building will have 233 studios, one-, and two-bedroom rental apartments. About 46 of those will be set aside as affordable.

At the groundbreaking event for the building, at 146 East 126th Street between Lexington and Third avenues, Ingels said the interiors of the building were inspired by his recent travels, bringing in a "cacophony of Caribbean colors" to the entranceway, elevator lobby, and mailbox area. The apartments themselves will be more subdued.
