East Village’s post office-replacing rental tops out

This building will also be home to Trader Joe's second East Village outpost

The East Village's post-office replacing residential building has topped out, EV Grieve reports. Developed by Benenson Capital Partners and Mack Real Estate Group, the project is being built at the site of the former Peter Stuyvesant Post Office at 432-438 East 14th Street.

Previously the developers were seeking a zoning variance to build a 12-story building with 114 apartments, but after a strong pushback from East Villagers, the developers were forced to build an as-of-right project. That means the rental now stands eight-stories tall, though the developers have chosen to keep the apartment count the same. Of the total units, 23 will be affordable apartments.

In May this year, Trader Joe's revealed that it would be opening its second East Village location at the base of this building. Trader Joe's will take up 8,531 square feet on the first floor, and 14,170 square feet on a lower level. This store is scheduled to open sometime next year, so that likely means the rental development above will also wrap construction around the same time.
