Colorful pop-up pools return to Brooklyn Bridge Park, Roosevelt Island

The weather is warm and the pools are open

Two of the city's most popular pop-up pools are returning for the season.

In a few weeks, Brooklyn Bridge Park's beloved pop-up pool will reopen for the season after successfully securing a one-year extension to keep the waterfront pool in place following the expiration of its five-year contract with the city. The Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation is still pursuing its quest to secure a permanent location for the pool, which is currently located at Pier 2 but for now, the fun is on.

Meanwhile, Manhattan Park Pool Club on Roosevelt Island has reopened its massive waterfront pool, this year trading its cotton candy colors for a new design from artist Gregg Emery called "Waves on Roosevelt Island."

Drawing inspiration from a multitude of sources that include the opening scene in the classic Bond Film Goldfinger that showcases a vivid pool in Miami, as well from the "flow of people, water, and vehicles," the pool portrays bright swirls of bright blue, purple, and pink against a light blue base coat. It's not as vibrant as designs featured in previous years, like that of last year's pool artist Andrew Faris, but it's still highly intriguing.

The pop-up at Brooklyn Bridge Park is set to reopen on Friday, June 29 while Roosevelt Island's pool is already open for the season with weekday costs set at $35 and $50 on weekends for non-Roosevelt Island residents (residents pay $25 and $35 respectively).
