Target’s East Village outpost due to open in July

The 27,000-square-foot "small format" store is part of the megachain's larger NYC expansion

Brace yourselves, East Villagers: Target's opening day is almost upon us. The megachain announced that its latest small-format store, located at the corner of 14th Street and Avenue A, will open on July 21.

The 27,000-square-foot store—which indeed counts as "small format" for Target—is located at the base of EVGB, Extell's pricey rental that debuted earlier this year. Target inked a 30-year lease for the space, which replaced a Rite Aid, the dive bar Blarney Cove, Stuyvesant Grocery, Pete's-a-Place Pizza, and more. According to Target, these small-format stores are "tailored to meet … local needs"—in this case, it'll stock groceries, beauty supplies, home goods, and baby items.

The big-box retailer is quickly expanding its reach across the city: It'll open no fewer than eight stores by the end of 2019, with two—the 14th Street one, and one in the Essex Crossing megaproject—debuting this year. The latest to be announced is a 21,000-square-foot store in Kips Bay, which will open on 29th Street and Second Avenue next year.
